Fresh Salsa with a Bit of Spice
It’s a fruit lover’s favorite time of year! I’m talking about winter citrus. I’m talking lemons, grapefruit, and oranges (specifically blood oranges). Have you checked Instagram on a cold January afternoon? Your timeline may be filled with beautiful still photography of blood oranges and delicious recipes. Here’s my contribution to beloved blood oranges (check out my Instagram Post). With that, I have a quick and easy recipe for Chunky Blood Orange Salsa to make your next meal complete.
This salsa is super chunky (just as a title says), super light, with immense flavor (with the help of the blood oranges, tomatoes, jalapeños, and lime juice that brings everything together).
Ingredients
Blood Oranges: The essence of regular orange, just not as sweet. Slightly tart and every bit delicious. These bright-colored gems are what make this dish great.
Red Onion: Fragrant red onions add a subtle but necessary kick to bring you much flavor
Tomatoes: The base of a good salsa usually involves tomatoes. A few tomatoes chopped to perfection to complement the blood oranges and add to the chunky texture we all love about salsa
Jalapeños: For a bit of spicy kick this recipe uses jalapeños
Cilantro: A handful of cilantro goes a long way
Limes: The hidden ingredient that brings everything together
Uses for Chunky Blood Orange Salsa
There are many ways to eat salsa. The first thing that comes to mind is a classic, with tortilla chips. The big game day is fastly approaching and any type of salsa is especially appropriate for this occasion (or any sports gathering). If tortilla chips do not suit your fancy there are plenty of other ways to enjoy this Blood Orange Salsa.

Tips for the Best Salsa
There’s really no way to mess this recipe up. It’s as easy as 123. Although, there are a few tips to help make the preparing just a little bit easier.
The longest part of this entire process is actually prep. You will spend several minutes peeling the blood oranges, then slices, and cut into cubes. Once you get to the actual meat of the orange it seems so small compared to its size with the skin. That’s due to blood oranges thick peel.
Here’s my main tip: Do yourself a favor and don’t use your hands to peel the blood orange. Why? Because you will still have that layer of membrane on the outside. We certainly don’t want to be chewing on that while enjoying this salsa. Instead, use your knife to cut the orange in half and slowly shave off the skin (reposition the fruit to avoid cutting towards yourself). You will save yourself so much time, promise.
Prep this salsa ahead of time by making sure you have the onion, tomatoes, and blood oranges ready to go. For the cilantro, you can wait until it’s actually time to make it to help preserve the freshness of the herbs.
Once everything is all mixed in together let sit in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. This allows the salsa to soak in all the lime juice. You may also notice more liquid.
Best Type of Tomatoes?
Anything on hand would certainly due but it’s recommended to use Roma tomatoes which are known for being ideal for salsa. Roma tomatoes are more widely available at local grocery stores.
